The massive fire that broke out in Goa’s famous club ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ on Saturday night shook everyone. 26 people died in this accident, which included tourists and club staff. Most of the people died not due to burning but due to suffocation because they were trapped in the ground floor and kitchen. The accident started when Kazakhstan’s professional belly dancer Kristina was performing on stage.

‘I just survived…’- Christina’s painful statement

According to the report published in India Today, the very next day of the fire, Christina, with her voice trembling, said that she was ‘grateful to be alive’. She said, ‘The fire broke out due to a short circuit during my performance. I was stunned. The music stopped suddenly and I could not understand what happened. I immediately started looking for a way out. Christina was giving her second performance of the night on the stage at that time. She did not understand that suddenly. What happened, and when they tried to escape, they encountered the greatest danger.

A warning from a crew member saved his life

In panic, Christina first wanted to run towards her changing room, but then a crew member stopped her. This moment became for him the biggest wall between life and death. Christina told that my first instinct was to go towards my changing room. But my crew member said, ‘Don’t go there.’ The fire had reached there. That warning saved my life. An emotional Christina called that team member ‘Indian God’, because of which she was able to hug her daughter today.

“When I reached home and hugged my daughter, I felt thankful to be alive,” Christina said in a tearful voice. The club fire not only burnt the building, it also turned the happiness, dreams and lives of many families into ashes. Initial investigation by Goa Police revealed that electric firecrackers were used during the dance performance, due to which a short circuit occurred and the fire spread. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant clearly said that the club had not followed fire safety norms.

Five arrested so far, owner absconding

Intensifying the action, the police have arrested several management members associated with the club – Chief General Manager Rajeev Modak, General Manager Vivek Singh, Bar Manager Rajeev Singhania, Gate Manager Riyanshu Thakur, another staff member. A look-out notice has been issued against the club’s owners and the investigation is revealing several irregularities – particularly irregularities in license documentation. After the accident, the administration has also sealed a beach shack and another club of Romeo Lane Group.
