‘CM who will give 500 crores’
Navjot Kaur told reporters, “We always talk about Punjab and Punjabiyat… but we don’t have Rs 500 crore to sit on the chief minister’s chair.” When asked if anyone has asked for money, she said, “No one has asked, but whoever pays Rs 500 crore, becomes the Chief Minister.”
Disputes and clarifications
A big political controversy arose after this statement. Kaur later clarified that her point was presented in a hackneyed manner. She said, “I only said that the Congress party never asked us for anything. When asked if Navjot could be the chief ministerial candidate from another party, I said that we don’t have the money to give anyone for the chief ministerial post.” However, this explanation proved futile and the party took immediate action.

Opposition will attack Congress
Navjot Kaur’s statement created a big storm in the political circle. All the opposition parties, including the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), sharply criticized the Congress. According to him, this statement has exposed the ‘hard truth’ of the working of the Congress.
Attack of Ravneet Singh Bittu
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu reacted to Navjot Kaur’s statement. “When my grandfather was chief minister, such things did not happen in the Congress, but now we have been hearing all this for the past few years,” he said. “This is the reason why people like me left the party,” Bittu further explained.
Criticizing Congress’s internal affairs, Bittu said, “I don’t think the Congress party will ever investigate the matter. There is a Chief Minister who says that instead of money, we send socks and underwear to the Gandhi family… From there the list will come and we will send the goods.”
What did the Aam Aadmi Party say?
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has commented on Navjot Kaur’s statement. AAP General Secretary Baltej Pannu issued a statement saying, ‘Navjot Kaur Sidhu has made two explosive claims. The first claim is that he will become active in Punjab politics only if the Congress declares him as the chief ministerial face. Another claim is that Sidhu does not have Rs 500 crore. This means that it takes Rs 500 crores to become a Chief Minister in Congress.
Speaking further, Pannu said, ‘Sidhu does not have Rs 500 crore, then which leader has so much money? Where does this money go? To the state unit president? To the high command? To Rahul Gandhi or Mallikarjun Kharge? People of Punjab want answers to these questions.’
