Savannah Guthrie to Host New NBC Special Series
The Today Show host Savannah Guthrie will be the first to host a new NBC special series called “Finding Common Ground” that will air across many of the network’s news programs. Based on feedback NBC has received from its audience on how divisive and polarized the news has become, these segments will feature bipartisan conversations that reach across the aisle between Democratic and Republican lawmakers. The first of these “Finding Common Ground” specials will be hosted live by Guthrie and will continue through other NBC shows, like TODAY, NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas, and Meet the Press with Kristen Welker.
Guthrie will moderate “Finding Common Ground” live event
Savannah Guthrie will moderate the first of the “Finding Common Ground” editorial series on December 9, 2025, at 8 PM ET on NBC News Now.
The live event will feature a conversation between Governor Spencer Cox and Governor Josh Shapiro as part of the “Toward a Better Politics” forum at The Washington National Cathedral. The special will air again on December 10 on The Today Show and Meet The Press NOW.
Those who watch Meet The Press might recognize this series as an extension of Kristen Welker’s “Finding Common Ground” format for the program’s Sunday roundtable. Fox News viewers will note that the program “Special Report With Bret Baier” has featured similar segments called “Common Ground” too.
Cesar Conde, chairman for NBCUniversal News Group, said in a statement that “Finding Common Ground” is meant to bring “civil dialogue” and “cut through polarization.” As noted by The Los Angeles Timesa Pew Research study said only 36% of U.S. adults follow the news “all or most of the time,” as opposed to 51% about a decade ago in 2016.
Tom Bettag, a lecturer from the University of Maryland, points out that this new series comes amid attacks on mainstream news outlets for being biased from right-wing critics and President Trump.
It’s unclear how frequent the “Finding Common Ground” series will appear on NBC, but it is expected that Welker will host the majority of these segments.
