But if these woolen clothes which provide warmth to the body are not taken care of properly, they get spoiled very quickly. Actually, most people shy away from washing woolen clothes in winter. Sometimes there is fear of shrinking or sometimes fear of their texture getting spoiled. When should you wash woolen clothes?

    • Woolen sweaters should not be washed daily or weekly. Actually, people wear undershirts under sweaters which protects the wool from body oil. Because of this, woolen clothes can be worn several times before washing them.

       

 

    • To keep woolen clothes fresh, hang them in an airy place after wearing. Wash woolen clothes only when they become dirty. Or they may be stained or have a strong odor.

       

 

    • However, you can wash them after 4 to 5 wears. But, if you’re wearing a layer underneath, you can use more.

       

 

    • Dry clean a structured wool coat once or twice during the winter season, or use a spot cleaning/home dry cleaning kit.

       

 

    • Wash the blanket only when it is dirty. When the winter season starts, wash woolen clothes thoroughly and store them.

       

 

Why washing woolen clothes less is a better option?

Wool fibers naturally repel water and bacteria, which keeps odors away. Wool naturally does not smell and is self-cleaning. Repeated washing damages the delicate wool fibers, causes colors to fade, and removes the protective lanolin. Washing should not be done unless they are clearly dirty or smelly.
