In fact, Justice Swaminathan of Madras High Court ordered that the traditional lamp of Karthigai Deepam be lit on the ‘Deepthoon’ pillar located on the hill of Thiruparankundram by 4th December. The order said that this practice would not violate the religious rights of the Muslim community. Overriding the objections of the temple and dargah management, a limited number of devotees were allowed to light lamps with safety.

But the state government refused to implement the order citing threat to law and order. After this Hindu groups protested, police used force to stop the devotees, devotees clashed with the police, the matter turned into a political and judicial-religious confrontation between DMK.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai launched a scathing attack on the opposition alliance, saying that the INDI block was proudly displaying its anti-Hindu attitudes. Calling it the politics of minority appeasement, he said that despite the appeal being pending in the Supreme Court, the move of impeachment gives the message that the decisions are being challenged due to political pressure.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition of the Tamil Nadu government, in which the High Court’s order regarding lighting of lamps has been challenged. The court will now take the final decision on this religious-disciplinary issue.
