Those who did not take part in the freedom struggle are teaching the lesson of patriotism today…Kharge’s target on BJP and PM Modi

New Delhi. While participating in the discussion on Vande Mataram in Rajya Sabha, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said that those who did not take part in the freedom struggle are today teaching the lessons of patriotism. The Congress Party itself has done the work of making Vande Mataram the slogan of independence. Regarding the mention of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru in the House, Kharge said that all these efforts to defame the former Prime Minister will go in vain and BJP will not be able to succeed in this.

He further said, when Mahatma Gandhi launched the ‘Non-Cooperation Movement’ in 1921, lakhs of Congress workers and freedom fighters were going to jail raising slogans – Bharat Mata ki Jai, Mahatma Gandhi ji ki Jai. Whereas at the same time your (RSS-BJP) people were working for the British. Today you are teaching us patriotism. Also said, I heard the speech of Prime Minister Modi, he accused Nehru ji and said – In 1937, under the leadership of Nehru ji, the Congress Party had removed important verses from the original ‘Vande Mataram’ song. Today BJP people are saying such things. But when BJP’s progenitor Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was running the government in Bengal with the Muslim League, where was your patriotism?
BJP should read its history.

The Congress President said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji mentioned Nehru ji’s letter regarding Subhash Chandra Bose ji. As always he misled the House. Narendra Modi ji’s allegations are beyond facts and are misleading people. The truth is that on 16 October 1937, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ji wrote a letter to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore ji and asked him what attitude the Congress should take towards ‘Vande Mataram’?

The next day, Netaji wrote a letter to Nehru ji and suggested that Nehru ji should personally meet Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore ji on this subject. On 25 October 1937, Nehru met Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and wrote a letter on 26 October 1937, in which he said – “In offering my own opinion about it, I’m reminded that the privilege of originally setting its first stanza to the tune was mine. To me, the spirit of tenderness and devotion expressed in its first portion, the emphasis it gave to the beautiful and beneficial aspects of our motherland, made a special appeal, so much so that I found no difficulty in disassociating it with the rest of the poem.

The first two stanzas are such that it is impossible for anyone to take objection to. Remember we are thinking in terms of National Song for all India.” These are the words of Rabindranath Tagore. Is BJP against it, will BJP condemn it? The truth is that the Congress Working Committee unanimously passed these words of Gurudev on 28 October 1937.

The prominent leaders who agreed to this proposal included Mahatma Gandhi ji, Maulana Azad ji, Pandit Nehru ji, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ji, Dr. Rajendra Prasad ji, Sardar Patel ji, JP Kripalani ji, Govind Vallabh Pant ji. The resolution states that “The Committee which has to point out that the modern evolution of the use of this song as part of national life is of infinitely greater importance. Therefore, the Committee recommends that wherever Vande Mataram is sung at national gatherings, only the first two stanzas should be sung, with perfect freedom to organize, to sing any other song of unobjectionable character can be sung.”

This proposal was approved in the working committee. All the prominent leaders were present in this committee, so why are all of them being insulted? The question is also why Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah are targeting Nehru ji? He further said, by creating a new controversy on ‘Vande Mataram’, Narendra Modi ji has insulted the national heroes as well as Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore ji. This is an insult to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ji, who made ‘Vande Mataram’ the heartbeat of the freedom struggle. Along with this, Narendra Modi ji has insulted the entire generation who endured the tortures of jail for freedom and sacrificed themselves keeping this song in their heart. Therefore Narendra Modi ji should apologize to the country.
