Wedding video sparks colourism backlash in India

Rishabh Rajput and Sonali Chouksey recently married in Madhya Pradesh, India. The couple first met in college 11 years ago and fell in love. Their wedding was colourful and full of traditional rituals. They shared photos and videos of the celebrations on social media.

Instead of only congratulations, the posts attracted criticism and trolling. Many comments targeted Rishabh Rajput’s darker skin tone. Some questioned Sonali’s intentions, suggesting she married him for money or a secure job. Others implied the marriage was a mismatch.

The couple said the online reaction was shocking and hurtful. “It was supposed to be our happiest moment. We waited years for this day. Seeing people judge us based on skin colour was painful,” Rishabh said. He added that he has faced colour discrimination his whole life but remains focused on being a good husband.

Sonali also spoke about the effect of trolling. “It bothers me when people call him names or label me a gold-digger. Our life is being judged by strangers based on a few photos,” she said.

Rishabh addressed the trolls directly on social media. He said he is not a government employee, but works hard to provide for his family. He added that Sonali stood by him through every challenge, long before their wedding. “People’s negative opinions mean nothing to me,” he said.

The couple stressed that skin colour should not define a person’s worth. “Fair skin does not make someone better. Darker skin does not make someone worse. India is home to people with many skin tones. It is time to change this mindset,” Rishabh said.

They also highlighted that outsiders cannot judge a relationship from a short video. “We have spent 11 years together. A 30-second clip cannot show our journey. Those who call us a mismatch do not know our story,” he added.
