Supreme Court expressed concern over increasing violence on SIR and BLO, notice to EC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard a serious case (Supreme Court EC Hearing) related to the suicide of SIR and BLO in West Bengal. the court on this election Commission Notice has been issued to. The petition was filed by the Sanatani Sansad Organization, demanding that the Bengal Police be subordinated to the Election Commission until the SIR process is completed and the voter list is published.

It was also told in the petition (Supreme Court EC Hearing) that incidents of violence against BLOs are increasing continuously in West Bengal, hence deployment of central forces is necessary to ensure security in the state. On the basis of this, the Supreme Court has also sent a notice to the Mamata government. The notice asks what alternative steps can be taken regarding deployment of central armed forces till the completion of SIR.

Election Commission’s arguments during the hearing…

If the situation worsens due to obstruction in the work of SIR in the states, then there will be no option left but to take the police on deputation. We have all the constitutional rights to deal with the actions of threatening or obstructing the officers engaged in BLO and SIR.

Two important instructions of the Supreme Court

The Election Commission should take seriously the lack of cooperation by individual state governments in the work of SIR. The court said that if the situation does not improve, anarchy may spread. If incidents of obstruction, intimidation or lack of cooperation come to light in the work of BLOs, the Election Commission should bring it directly to the notice of the court. The court said we will give orders.

EC raised questions on security

Election Commission’s lawyer Rakesh Dwivedi clearly told the court that the police are under the control of the state government, and the Commission expects the state government to provide them security. He said that if the state government refuses to provide security, the local police will have to be taken on deputation. Dwivedi also said that if the Election Commission does not have confidence in the state police, then central forces will be sought.
