Lionel Messi becomes MLS Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive time
Miami. Argentina’s legendary footballer Lionel Messi has won the Major League Soccer (MLS) ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) award for the second consecutive time. Messi was given this honor on Tuesday for his brilliant performance in leading Inter Miami to the MLS title and scoring the most goals in the league.
The 38-year-old Messi has become the first player to be named MLS MVP twice in a row. He is also only the second player in MLS history to win MVP twice. Earlier this feat was achieved only by Preki, who won the award in 1997 and 2003.
Messi won the MLS Golden Boot by scoring 29 goals and assisting 19 goals in this season’s regular matches. He also became only the second player to lead the league in both goals and assists in the regular season. Earlier this feat was done by Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC in 2015.
Messi, who signed a three-year contract extension with Inter Miami in October, also performed brilliantly in the MLS playoffs. He scored 6 goals and gave 9 assists in the playoffs. Inter Miami defeated Vancouver 3-1 in the final played last weekend to win their first MLS Cup title. In this match, Messi made two important assists and was also named MLS Cup MVP.
The award adds another feather to Messi’s already-full trophy cabinet. He has won a record eight Ballon d’Or, three FIFA Men’s Best Player Awards, two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls, three UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, six European Golden Shoes, six La Liga Best Player Awards and 15 Argentine Footballer of the Year awards.
