Today is a historic day for Indian culture, Diwali included in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
New Delhi: India’s festival of lights, Diwali, has been included in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on Wednesday (December 10, 2025). This decision was taken in an important meeting of UNESCO being held at the Red Fort in Delhi. This is the first time that India is hosting the session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat confirmed its inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. He wrote in the X Post, “A historic day for India. Diwali has been officially included in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Under the tenure of Honorable PM Shri Narendra Modi, India’s cultural heritage is gaining greater recognition across the world and this milestone further strengthens that journey.
Shekhawat further wrote, “This honor celebrates the universal message of our festival of lights: hope over despair, reconciliation over division, and light for all. I am grateful to UNESCO and every guardian of our everlasting traditions. Jai Hind.”
