Year Ender 2025: Changing situation in Pakistan…Munir following General Zia’s footsteps, Shahbaz’s big game under the guise of power
Army Rule in Pakistan: Religion has always been used in politics in Pakistan. But in 2025, some such incidents happened in the neighboring country which show that Pakistan seems to be stuck in the same old cycle, where democracy is only a show and the real power is in the hands of the army. This year, the power of Army Chief General Asim Munir increased rapidly and many decisions reminded people of the era of General Zia.
Asim Munir and Sena did politics fiercely in the name of religion in 2025. From Pahalgam attack to Operation Sindoor, he repeatedly made provocative statements on issues like Islamic identity, security of religion and keeping the country Islamic-free. While inflation, unemployment and economic crisis were increasing in the country, the government and the army used religious slogans to divert public attention. Even on TV channels, the atmosphere was created that Islam is in danger and only the army can save it from this danger.
Policy of a thousand wounds against India
Asim Munir and the Army again intensified the old narrative against India in 2025. Sometimes it was said that India wants to weaken Islamic Pakistan, sometimes small tension on the border was presented as a religious duty. At many places this statement was spread that due to the threat from India, it is necessary to give more strength to the army. Apart from this, Munir also gave slogan of policy of thousand wounds against India.
This slogan is not new in Pakistan. After the crushing defeat by India in the 1971 war, to hide the shortcomings of the army and the atrocities committed in Bangladesh, the then Army Chief and later President General Zia ul Haq had adopted the policy of “India a thousand wounds”, holding India responsible for the defeat. Munir is also seen following in the footsteps of Zia to hide the defeat in Operation Sindoor. Thus, Pakistan’s weak economy and political turmoil receive less attention as public attention is diverted towards anti-India sentiments.
Shahbaz Sharif’s game behind the scenes
Along with Munir, the role of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in 2025 was also no less interesting. Many reports claimed that he compromised with the army to save power. Apparently the government is theirs, but major decisions are taken only with the approval of Munir and the army. The army and the government together presented the actions taken against Imran Khan as an issue of religion and security in front of the public, so that the voice of protest becomes weak.

Democracy weak, army stronger
Democratic institutions are weakening in Pakistan and the army is again openly strengthening its hold in politics. The increasing power of General Munir and the narrative being run in the name of Islam clearly shows that Pakistan’s politics has still not come out of the old mentality. Recently he has been appointed the new Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) of Pakistan. This means that now Munir has the keys to power in one hand and control of the nuclear bomb in the other. In the history of Pakistan, only General Zia ul Haq had this much power.
