If we refresh old memories, then on hearing the name of RTO office, long queues, jostling and huge fees of brokers come to mind. But now times have changed. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made the entire process so easy and ‘faceless’ that now you will not even need to visit the RTO office.
Yes, now you can renew your license right from your smartphone while sitting at home and drinking the tea of your choice. Let us understand in very simple words how to do this.
Rules of validity and renewal of driving license
Generally, a private vehicle driving license is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or until you turn 50 (whichever comes first). If it expires, you still have time to renew it, but late fees will apply. It is illegal to drive after expiry, so why take the risk?
Step-by-Step Process to renew driving license at home
Now leave the habit of paying money to agents and be smart yourself. Just follow these easy steps:
- Visit the official website: First of all you should visit the Transport website of Government of India. parivahan.gov.in will go on.
- Select Online Services: On the homepage of the website, you will see ‘Online Services’ in the menu, click on it and select ‘Driving License Related Services’.
- Select your state: Now a list will open, select the name of your state from where you want service.
- DL Renewal Option: After selecting the state, you will see many colorful options. here you ‘Apply for DL Renewal’ Have to click on.
- Fill details: Now the system will ask you for some basic information. Here you have to enter your old driving license number and your date of birth. Then fill the captcha code and ‘Proceed’.
- Upload Documents: Now you will see your details on the screen. After this you will have to upload the necessary documents. Usually address proof (like Aadhaar card), copy of original license and a photo-sign have to be uploaded.
- Important tip: If you are above 40 years of age, you should Form 1A (Medical certificate) may also have to be made and uploaded.
- fees paid: The last step is payment. Pay the renewal fee using your credit/debit card or net banking. This fee can range between Rs 200 to Rs 400 depending on the state.
- Download Slip: As soon as the payment is made, you will get an Acknowledgment Slip. Keep it safely.
What will happen next?
After everything is submitted, the RTO officer will check your documents online. If everything is found correct, your new smart driving license will be printed and delivered directly to your home address through Speed Post. No lines, no extra costs!
