Often we forget to get a driving license, but if its date has passed, then you may have to pay a heavy fine. If we refresh old memories, on hearing the name of RTO office, long queues, jostling and huge fees of brokers come to our mind. But now times have changed. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made the entire process so easy and ‘faceless’ that now you will not even need to visit the RTO office. Yes, now you can renew your license from your smartphone while sitting at home and drinking the tea of your choice. Let us understand in very simple words how to do this. Rules of validity and renewal of driving license: Generally, a driving license for a private vehicle remains valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till you turn 50 (whichever comes first). If it expires, you still have time to renew it, but late fees will apply. Driving after expiry is illegal, so why take the risk? Step-by-Step Process to renew driving license at home. Now leave the habit of paying money to the agent and become smart yourself. Just follow these easy steps: Go to the government website: First of all you have to go to the Government of India’s transport website parivahan.gov.in. Select Online Services: On the homepage of the website, you will see ‘Online Services’ in the menu, click on it and select ‘Driving License Related Services’. Select your state: Now a list will open, select the name of your state from where you want the service. DL Renewal Option: After selecting the state, you will get several options. Colorful options will be visible. Here you have to click on ‘Apply for DL Renewal’. Fill the details: Now the system will ask you for some basic information. Here you have to enter your old driving license number and your date of birth. Then fill the captcha code and ‘Proceed’. Upload documents: Now you will see your details on the screen. After this you will have to upload the necessary documents. Generally, address proof (like Aadhar Card), copy of original license and a photo-sign have to be uploaded. Important Tip: If your age is more than 40 years, you may also have to get Form 1A (Medical Certificate) made and uploaded. Payment of Fees: The last step is payment. Pay the renewal fee using your credit/debit card or net banking. This fee can be between Rs 200 to Rs 400 depending on the state. Download the slip: You will get an Acknowledgment Slip as soon as the payment is made. Keep it safely. What happens next? After everything is submitted, the RTO officer will check your documents online. If everything is found correct, your new smart driving license will be printed and delivered directly to your home address through Speed Post. No queues, no extra expenses!
