8th Pay Commission: There may be a big announcement for employees in the budget?
New Delhi. The 8th Pay Commission has become the center of discussion for government employees and pensioners. Everyone wants to know when the salary and pension will be increased and whether it will be made a big announcement in the budget of 2026–27. Recently, it has become clear from the answers given on this subject in Parliament that the government is making active preparations in this direction.
Employees will benefit
At present 50.14 lakh employees and about 69 lakh pensioners are employed in the centre. All these come under the purview of the proposed revision of the 8th Pay Commission. That is, after the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations, the basic salary, allowances and pension of these employees will be directly affected.
What did the government say?
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told in the Lok Sabha that there is no need to worry about any delay regarding the 8th CPC. The commission will have to submit its recommendations within 18 months of its formation. The government also clarified that the central government itself will decide when the new salary and pension will be implemented.
What changes may come?
According to the Finance Ministry, the Eighth Pay Commission will give suggestions on many important aspects. This will include changes in the basic salary of employees, redesign of the structure of allowances, amendments in pension and retirement rules, recommendations related to the service conditions of employees. With the implementation of the recommendations of this Commission, not only will the monthly salary and pension increase, but there may also be a change in the method of calculating Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR).
Will DA and pension be merged?
In response to a question asked in the Rajya Sabha, the government said that merging DA and DR into basic pay or changing the pension structure is the responsibility of the 8th CPC. Only the Commission will give the final suggestion on this.
Provision of funds in Budget 2026–27
Pankaj Chaudhary clarified that as soon as the commission submits its report and the government approves it, necessary funds will be provisioned for it in the budget. It also said that lack of funds will not be a hindrance in implementing any recommendation.
Expected timeline for implementation
The commission will submit its report within 18 months from the date of formation. After that the Central Government will decide the date of implementation of the 8th Pay Commission.
