‘Abhishek cannot win every match’, Suryakumar blamed Shubman and himself for the defeat

Key Points:

After the 51-run defeat in the second T20, Suryakumar Yadav admitted that one cannot depend on Abhishek Sharma in every match. He said that he and Shubhman Gill could not fulfill the responsibility in the beginning. The plan of sending Akshar at number 3 was also not successful for the team.

Delhi: After the 51-run defeat at the hands of South Africa in the second T20, captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted that he and Shubman Gill could not fulfill their responsibilities properly. He said that Abhishek Sharma cannot give a strong start to the team in every match and senior players should come forward and handle the innings.

Abhishek scored 17 runs in 8 balls, but Gill was out on the very first ball and Suryakumar also returned to the pavilion in the powerplay after scoring 5 runs. Chasing the difficult target of 214 runs, India was all out for 162 runs.

Surya took responsibility for the defeat

After the match, Suryakumar said, “I think Shubman and I could have given a good start because we cannot rely on Abhishek every time. The way he is batting, sometimes he too can have a bad day. I, Shubman and the other batsmen should have come forward and taken responsibility.”

He further said, “If we had taken some time, it would have been a wise chase. Shubman got out on the first ball, but I should have taken responsibility and batted longer. But it’s okay, we learn and will try to do better in the next match.”

Questions raised on sending number 3 to Akshar Patel

Team India surprised everyone by sending Akshar Patel at number 3, but his run-a-ball 21 runs could not provide momentum to the team. Suryakumar also did not give a clear answer on this decision.

He said, “We had seen in the last match that Akshar had batted well in the longer format. So we thought that today also he would show the same game. But, this plan did not work as expected. Let’s see what will be better for us in the next match.”

Surya said even when the yorker did not work

Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah together gave nine sixes in this match. The ball was wet due to dew, and Bumrah was continuously trying to bowl yorkers, which resulted in full toss many times.

Regarding this, the Indian captain said, “We bowled first and later understood how important the right length is on this wicket. If the yorker was not working, we should have adopted another plan, but we missed it there.”

He further said, “We saw how the South African fast bowlers bowled in the second innings. We have learned a lot from them and will come with a better plan in the next match.”
