Former Home Minister Shivraj Patil Passes Away: Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil died on Friday in Latur at the age of 90. He breathed his last at his residence at around 6:30 in the morning. Due to prolonged illness, he was under care at home for some time. In a long political career, Shivraj Patil held many important positions, including Speaker of the Lok Sabha and several key ministries in the central government. He was elected MP from Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times.
Due to his demise, there is a wave of mourning not only in Maharashtra but in the politics of the entire country. Shivraj Patil was known as a calm, restrained and extremely hard-working leader in Indian politics.

President expressed grief over his demise
President Draupadi Murmu condoled the demise of Shivraj Patil, saying, “We have lost a prominent public personality in the demise of senior political leader Shivraj Patil ji. During his long public life, he held many important positions including Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Union Minister, Governor and long-term Member of Parliament. My deepest condolences to his family, well-wishers and admirers.”
Rahul Gandhi said irreparable loss
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep condolences on the demise of Patil. He tweeted, “The news of the demise of former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil ji is extremely sad and an irreparable loss for the party. His dedication to public service, his contribution to the nation will always be remembered. My condolences are with the entire Patil family, their well-wishers and supporters in this hour of grief.”

Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar said on Patil’s demise, “Shivraj Patil, who was the former Speaker of the Lok Sabha. His demise is very sad news for the country and the state. He has seen a long political journey. He worked in the state, worked at the Centre, worked as a minister and also worked as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. I think the passing of such an experienced leader is a very sad time for the nation and the state.”
Shivraj Patil was born on 12 October 1935 in Chakur of Latur district. After completing his studies, he first practiced Ayurveda and then studied law from Mumbai University. His journey in politics started in 1967, when he took over the job in Latur Municipality. This beginning later became the foundation of a big political career.
How was the political journey of Shivraj Patil?
In 1980, he was elected MP from Latur Lok Sabha seat for the first time, and subsequently won the same seat seven consecutive times. This achievement makes him one of the most influential leaders of Maharashtra. In the governments of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, he served as Minister of State in many important departments such as Defence, Commerce, Science & Technology, Atomic Energy, Electronics and Space.
Shivraj Patil was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 1991 to 1996. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives such as modernization of the Lok Sabha, computerization, live telecast of proceedings and construction of a new library building. This period is particularly notable for the technical and administrative changes in the Indian Parliament.
Despite losing the Lok Sabha elections in 2004, he was appointed Home Minister at the Centre. However, after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, he resigned taking moral responsibility. He was then made the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, where he served from 2010 to 2015.
