ED takes action in cough syrup case, raids 25 locations in three states, investigation continues
New Delhi. Taking major action in the cough syrup case containing codeine, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today raided 25 places simultaneously in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Jharkhand. This raid has been conducted on the premises of the main accused in the case, Shubham Jaiswal’s associates, constables Alok Singh, Amit Singh, dismissed from UP Police, their chartered accountants and cough syrup supplier pharma companies. At present all these places are being investigated by the team of ED officers. Some evidence has been found that cough syrup is being supplied in Nepal and Bangladesh also, due to which ED has conducted this raid due to fear of money laundering.

Raids are underway in UP’s Lucknow, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Saharanpur, Jharkhand’s Ranchi and Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. More than 30 FIRs have been registered in this matter during the last two months in different districts of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, Varanasi, Sonbhadra, Saharanpur and Ghaziabad. All these FIRs have been registered in cases related to illegal stocking, transportation, trading and cross-border supply of codeine-based cough syrup.

The investigation so far in this case has revealed that illegal money worth more than Rs 1000 crore is involved in this entire racket. Police have so far arrested 32 people from different parts of the country in this case. However, the main accused Shubham Jaiswal is still absconding and it is said that he is hiding in Dubai. Police have arrested Shubham Jaiswal’s father Bhola Prasad. Let us tell you that this matter came to notice after the recent death of several children due to cough syrup containing codeine, after which efforts are being made to nab the people involved in this entire racket.
