Tax exemptions on contraceptive drugs and products will be abolished in China from January 1. 13% tax will be applicable on all contraceptive products including condoms. The government media may not have given much prominence to this step, but this issue is trending rapidly on Chinese social media, where people are making fun of the government over it.

There was an uproar on social media

After the implementation of the new rules, contraceptives will now come under the ambit of 13% tax like normal consumer goods. Many citizens on social media are calling this an absurd step by the government. Many users are writing that “Those who do not understand that raising children is more expensive than taxed condoms, they must be fools.” Many people have taken sarcasm by linking this decision to the government’s policy of increasing population.

‘One-child policy’ was once implemented in China

China implemented the ‘one-child policy’ from approximately 1980 to 2015. Under this, heavy fines, social punishment and in many cases even forced abortions were done for breaking the rules. Children from some families were not even given official identification numbers, making them legal non-citizens. In 2015 this limit was increased to two children and in 2021 it was increased to three.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, there will be only 95 lakh births in China in the year 2024, whereas in 2019 this number was 147 lakh. Due to continuously falling birth rate and increasing death rate, India became the most populous country in the world in 2023, pushing China to second place.
