To become an umpire, it is not necessary to have played cricket before, but a deep understanding of its rules, techniques and match situations is very important. Qualification for umpiring
Umpiring starts with taking membership of a state cricket association. After this the candidate has to gain experience of umpiring in matches organized at the state level. This experience later makes one eligible for BCCI’s Level 1 Umpire Exam.
BCCI conducts Level 1 Umpire examination every year. Coaching classes are given to the candidates about three days before the examination. In which the rules, match situation and nuances of umpiring are explained. The examination is merit based. After clearing Level 1, candidates are given an induction course and then have to undergo practical and oral tests.

The candidate then becomes eligible for the Level 2 exam, which is required to be given within a year of passing Level 1. After clearing level 2, there are medical and physical tests. On successful completion of all the stages, the candidate is declared a certified umpire of BCCI. Umpires who have performed outstandingly at the domestic level are also recommended by the BCCI for the ICC panel.
how much do you earn
An umpire’s earnings depend on his grade and match level. The BCCI generally classifies domestic umpires into three grades: A, B and C.
- Grade A umpire around Rs 40000 per match
- Grade B and C around Rs 30000 per match
Earnings also increase rapidly as experience, performance and match category increases. At the international level this amount can be many times more. In such a situation, the dream of becoming an umpire for the youth can increase the possibilities of a better future.
