IPL 2026: Chinnaswamy Stadium to host RCB matches as government grants permission
Overview:
The change in stance came after Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that IPL 2026 matches will not move out of Bengaluru.
M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been permitted by the Karnataka state government to host matches again. However, the cricket association will have to follow the recommendations based on the Justice D’Cunha Commission’s report.
The Home Department has been told to ensure that the requirements mentioned in the report are implemented. “Matchhes will be allowed after the recommendations are fulfilled,” government sources said. The D’Cunha Commission’s July report mentioned the lack of modern safety features.
It is a big development as the venue was declared unsafe after the stampede during RCB’s victory parade that killed 11 people. The commission had said that the stadium infrastructure is not up to the mark and poses unacceptable risks for the management of the fans, emergency response and traffic control.
The change in stance came after Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that IPL 2026 matches will not move out of Bengaluru.
“The IPL matches will not shift anywhere, and we will ensure that they are played here,” he told reporters.
Shivakumar added that such incidents will not occur in the future, and a new stadium will also be constructed as an alternative.
Venkatesh Prasad, who is the new head of the KSCA, met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Deputy Chief Minister to discuss the possibilities of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium hosting matches.
Prasad said the new KSCA administration spoke to Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar and senior BCCI officials on hosting matches at the renowned venue.
Chinnaswamy Stadium didn’t host matches of the Women’s World Cup. The iconic venue will not be hosting Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2026.
Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad will host the matches in India, while three venues have been finalised in Sri Lanka.
