CM Mamata Banerjee did not fill the SIR form, said – it is better than rubbing nose on the ground
Kolkata. Assembly elections are going to be held in West Bengal next year. The politics of Bengal is at its peak regarding the Special Revision of Voter List (SIR) before the elections. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave a big statement and revealed that she has not yet filled the SIR form. He said that they do not need to prove their citizenship and doing so is humiliating. Banerjee said, I have not filled up the form yet. Why should I? I have been a Union Minister three times, an MP seven times and with your blessings I have become Chief Minister three times. Now I have to prove whether I am a citizen or not. It is better than rubbing one’s nose on the ground.
Earlier, while addressing a rally in Krishnanagar in Nadia district, he sharply alleged that the BJP and the central government were trying to make large-scale manipulations in the voter list before the 2026 assembly elections in Bengal. He alleged that Amit Shah is directly guiding the efforts to remove 1.5 crore names from the voters’ list. If even one eligible voter is excluded during the SIR process, she will sit on an indefinite strike.
The chief minister cited reports that people who had submitted names of grandparents as part of their documents would be called for hearings and risk having their names removed from the rolls. He said, now we hear that those who have given the names of their grandparents will be called and the plan is to remove the names directly from these hearings. It is noteworthy that the Election Commission has clarified that constitutional officials including the Chief Minister are kept in the ‘marked elector’ category, hence they are not obliged to fill the form like ordinary citizens. This category includes the Prime Minister, all Chief Ministers and other constitutional office holders and are not legally required to submit census forms. The first phase of SIR in Bengal is ending today on Thursday, with the draft rolls to be declared on December 16 and the hearing and verification will continue till mid-December and January. The final voter list is due to be published in mid-February.
