Vietnam’s National Assembly on Dec. 11 approved a VND196 trillion (US$7.8 billion) plan to build Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh Province, paving the way for a new world-class aviation hub in the north.

Designed to meet 5-star global standards, the airport is expected to serve 30 million passengers by 2030 and expand to 50 million by 2050.

The project will cover nearly 1,900 hectares across four communes in the province that borders Hanoi, and be built to ICAO’s top 4F classification, a level capable of handling the world’s largest commercial aircraft.

Plans call for two pairs of parallel runways spaced 1,800 meters apart, allowing fully independent takeoffs and landings. Phase one includes a 5-star passenger terminal, cargo terminal, VIP apron, maintenance complex and 83 aircraft stands, which will later expand to 123.

Funded entirely by investors through equity and legally mobilized capital, the airport is expected to become a new growth engine for eastern Hanoi and the northern key economic region.

The government aims to develop Gia Binh into a smart, green, dual-use aviation hub that could rank among the world’s top 10 five-star airports, according to Skytrax benchmarks. It is also envisioned as a major transit gateway and aircraft maintenance center for the Asia–Pacific region.

Nearly 7,100 households will be affected by land acquisition for the project.
