Bangladesh in the heat of election violence, miscreants set fire to EC office, candidate also shot
Bangladesh News Hindi: The political atmosphere in Bangladesh is becoming increasingly tense after the announcement of general election dates. An increase in incidents of violence, attacks and vandalism is being seen in many parts of the country. In this series, a serious case of election violence has come to light from Lakshmipur district, where miscreants set the District Election Commission office on fire.
According to Bangladeshi media outlet UNB, the district election office located in Lakshmipur city was targeted early Saturday. District Election Officer Mohammad Abdur Rashid said that unknown miscreants poured petrol from the windows of the office and set it on fire at around 3:30 in the morning and fled from the spot. As soon as the fire broke out, there was chaos in the area.

However, the security guard deployed in the office with the help of local people controlled the fire in time, thereby avoiding major damage. According to Rashid, some important documents of the office have been burnt in this incident. He said that legal action is being taken regarding the matter and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
As soon as information about the incident was received, the Deputy Commissioner, Police Administration and senior officials of the Election Commission reached the spot and took stock of the situation. Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mohammad Rezaul Haq said that the people involved in the arson were being identified and raids were underway to arrest them.
Attack on a journalist doing coverage
Even before this, a major incident of election violence had come to light. Sharif Usman Bin Hadi, independent candidate from Dhaka-8 seat and spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, was shot and seriously injured in broad daylight. Two miscreants riding a bike fired at them and fled from the spot. Hadi’s condition is said to be critical and he has been kept under special observation of doctors at Evercare Hospital.
Not only this, a journalist who was covering this attack was also allegedly attacked, due to which questions have been raised about the safety of the press. After the incident, Chief Advisor to the interim government Mohammad Yunus Khan met the family of the injured candidate and assured a fair investigation and strict punishment to the culprits.

According to reports, the government has announced a reward of Taka 50 lakh for anyone who helps in the arrest of the accused involved in the attempt to assassinate Sharif Usman Hadi. The ever-increasing violence has raised serious concerns regarding the electoral process and law and order.
