“MI gave him a stable position”: Sanjay Bangar reveals the reason behind Suryakumar Yadav’s failures in T20Is

Overview:

Former India all-rounder and ex-batting coach, Sanjay Bangar, mentioned that Suryakumar is a consistent performer for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t contributed with the bat for a long time. He has failed to score a fifty in the last 20 innings. Since November 2024, SKY has scored 227 runs at an average of 13.35. He has been found wanting against the South African bowlers in the first two games of the five-match T20I series.

He was dismissed for 12 in the series opener before recording five runs in the next contest. Former India all-rounder and ex-batting coach, Sanjay Bangar, mentioned that Suryakumar is a consistent performer for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Yadav was given a chance in international cricket following his match-winning scores in the IPL. He has scored a lot of runs for MI in the league. In IPL 2025, he accumulated 717 runs in 16 matches at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.92, which included five half-centuries. On the other hand, his bat has remained silent whenever he has donned the Indian jersey in the past year.

Bangar observed that India follows the flexible approach with the batter, which has led to Suryakumar’s downfall in T20Is.

“It has a lot to do with the team’s thought process. You want to keep the batting lineup flexible. However, the Mumbai Indians gave him a flexible position. If he came at No.3, his spot was fixed no matter what the situation of the match was. He is a quality player, and if you give him more balls to play, he can post a big score,” the former player said on Star Sports.

‘He shouldn’t be put under pressure as it impacts his batting style. The earlier he comes, the better it is for the team. When he batted at No.3, his runs came at an average of 65 and a strike rate of 168 in 16 innings (IPL). However, things are completely different in international cricket. It is a massive fall for him. He is averaging 14, and his strike rate is 126,” he added.

India still have three matches left against South Africa before their five-match T20I series against New Zealand before the 2026 T20 World Cup.
