Lucknow. There was a lot of speculation since Friday about the post of UP BJP President. There was suspense as to who would get this responsibility. Now the speculation and suspense is over. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary will be the next president of UP BJP. He will take over as UP BJP President in place of Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary. Pankaj Chaudhary reached Lucknow from Delhi on Saturday and filed nomination for the post of UP BJP President. UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Deputy CM and former UP BJP President Keshav Prasad Maurya along with other Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak became the proposer of Pankaj Choudhary. Smriti Irani and Baby Rani Maurya are also named among the proponents.

The discussion had gained momentum since Friday that the BJP leadership has decided to make Pankaj Chaudhary the UP BJP President. In BJP, the president is elected only through consensus. Pankaj Chaudhary is going to have a big responsibility on his shoulders if he becomes the UP BJP President. Assembly elections are to be held in UP in 2027. BJP has been forming the government in UP by winning the assembly elections twice in a row in 2017 and 2022. Never before had BJP formed the government twice in a row in UP. The onus will be on Pankaj Chaudhary to take appropriate decisions to bring BJP to power in UP for the third time in 2027.

Apart from this, the BJP leadership has also decided to solve the PDA issue of Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party by appointing Pankaj Chaudhary as the President of UP BJP. Pankaj Chaudhary will have to live up to this also. Before this, three Kurmi leaders have held the post of UP BJP President. Pankaj Choudhary will be the fourth leader of Kurmi caste to hold this post. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 3 candidates including Pankaj Chaudhary had won on BJP ticket in UP. There are about 9 percent Kurmi voters in UP. Kurmi voters dominate about 20 seats in Purvanchal region of UP. Also, by deciding to make Pankaj Chaudhary the UP BJP President, BJP has given a direct message to the backward castes of the state that an important responsibility has been given to the leader coming from among them.
