Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep concern over Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Usman Hadi being shot and seriously injured and said the incident was “completely unacceptable”. Inquilab Manch was at the forefront of the campaign to dissolve the Awami League of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Two attackers shot – police

In the afternoon, when Hadi was launching his election campaign in Bijoynagar area of ​​central Dhaka, where he was contesting as an independent candidate, two assailants riding a motorcycle shot him, police said.

A Dhaka Police spokesperson said, “Usman Hadi was shot at 2.25 pm in front of DR Tower on Box Culver Road in Bijoynagar. We have initially learned that three assailants riding a motorcycle shot him and fled from the spot.” Hadi was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Hadi’s condition critical, put on life support system

Pratham Aalo newspaper quoted DMCH Director Brigadier Mohammad Asaduzzaman as saying, “His (Hadi’s) condition is critical. He has been put on life support system. The bullet is stuck inside his head.”

Yunus government gave strict instructions to the police

Government news agency Bangladesh Samvad Sanstha (BSS) reported that the Chief Advisor has given strict instructions to law enforcement agencies to conduct a prompt and comprehensive investigation to identify all those involved in the attack and bring them to justice. Inquilab Manch emerged as a right-wing cultural and pressure group in August 2024, after violent student-led protests in July and August toppled the Awami League government of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The attack took place a day after the election announcement

The incident occurred a day after the Election Commission announced the election schedule, stating that the 13th parliamentary elections would be held on February 12. Inquilab Manch was at the forefront of the campaign to dissolve the Awami League. The Yunus-led interim government dissolved Hasina’s party in May this year, making her ineligible to contest the elections.

The group is leading a campaign to arrest “all terrorists” from the center to the grassroots level of the disbanded Awami League and ensure the safety of the “July warriors”.
