275 state-of-the-art libraries including Abohar’s ‘Abha Library’ became the pride of the government and an example for the country.
Punjab : Taking a historic initiative in the field of education, the Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has set up a strong chain of modern libraries in rural areas. So far, 275 state-of-the-art libraries have been started in the state, while construction work on 58 others is in progress. This initiative is not limited to the construction of buildings only, but it reflects the thinking of providing equal opportunities to the rural youth.
Abha Library became an identity
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Public Library established in Abohar, which is being known as Abha Library, has emerged as a symbol of this scheme. Seeing its grand design and modern facilities, people are comparing it with a luxury hotel. The videos going viral on social media testify that this government library is no less than a dream for common students.
Launch and expansion of the scheme
The rural library scheme, which started from Isru village of Khanna on 15 August 2024, has today become the cause of a quiet but effective change in the entire Punjab. Dozens of libraries have become active in Amritsar, Bathinda, Fazilka, Ludhiana, Patiala and other districts. About Rs 30 to 35 lakh is being spent on each rural library, while more than Rs 1 crore is being invested in district level libraries.
no shortage of features
These libraries have been designed according to modern needs. Facilities like Wi-Fi, solar energy, air-conditioned study room, RO water, CCTV security, computer section and inverter make them special. Thousands of books related to UPSC, SSC, Banking and other exams are available for preparation of competitive exams. Many libraries have a collection of more than 65 thousand books, which is being continuously expanded.
boon for youth
These libraries are no less than a boon for the students of rural and border districts. Where earlier students had to go to Chandigarh or Delhi for studies, now they are able to do high level preparation by staying in their villages. Students say that the environment here is calm, clean and inspiring.
Women’s participation and social impact
Separate and safe study arrangements have been made for women in these libraries, due to which the participation of girl students in rural areas has increased rapidly. The library named after Dr. Ambedkar gives the message of social equality and inclusive development. Students from Dalit, backward and economically weaker sections are also now getting quality resources.
Rejuvenation of old libraries
The Mann government not only built new libraries but also renovated old and historical libraries. Decades old libraries at places like Sangrur, Dhuri and Abohar have been modernized to suit today’s needs.
foundation of future change
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann believes that education is the biggest means of taking the society forward. This library movement is not only connecting students with knowledge, but is also laying the foundation for the bright future of Punjab. In the coming time, this library will produce doctors, engineers, scientists and administrative officers, who will play an important role in the development of the state and the country.
