The civic elections held in Kerala were being considered as the first semi-final of the upcoming assembly elections, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) performed brilliantly, surprising the ruling LDF and the opposition UDF. Counting of votes started on Saturday.
BJP’s excellent performance in municipal elections
Of the 101 wards in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, the BJP won 50 seats, while the LDF won 29 and the UDF won 19. With this impressive performance, the BJP ended the 45-year-long rule of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Democratic Front (LDF) over the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
Record victory of mayor candidate Srilekha
After this historic win, all eyes are on retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer R Sreelekha. He has won from Sasthamangalam division of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation and has been projected as the face of NDA for the post of mayor.
Talking to reporters, Sreelekha thanked the voters for the results and said that she has received information that no candidate has got such a lead in Sasthamangalam ward before. On the question of the possibility of becoming mayor, he said that the party will decide on this matter.
Career of Kerala’s first woman DGP
Born and brought up in Thiruvananthapuram, R Sreelekha became the first woman IPS officer of Kerala in January 1987. He served in many important departments including CBI, Kerala Crime Branch and Prison Department in his career spanning over three decades. During his tenure in CBI, he was known as ‘Raid Srilekha’ Got the nickname.

She was promoted to the post of Director General of Police (DGP) in 2017, making her the first woman to hold the position in Kerala. After retiring in December 2020, she joined the BJP in October 2024, influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is also a writer and currently publishes ‘Sasneham Sreelekha’ She also runs a YouTube channel named, where she shares her experiences as a police officer.
