Party decisions Mokim said, “I had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi, saying that the party is going through difficult times. The party needs new leadership. Mallikarjun Kharge is a very senior leader and age is not on his side. He is 83 years old. The required hard work, hard work and contacts are not possible for an opposition leader. He should remain as an advisor and bring someone young to the fore.”
He further said, “There are Priyanka and many other young people who will strengthen the party. Rahul is the leader of the Congress party and is playing his role. Someone will become the President and play his role. As a true worker of the Congress, this is my personal appeal to Sonia Gandhi.”
In his letter to former party president Sonia Gandhi, Mokim described the situation in the party as worrying, heartbreaking and unbearable. He pointed to six consecutive defeats in Odisha and three big national defeats. He attributed the recent poor performance in Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra and Kashmir to organizational shortcomings.
At the national level, Mokim talked about the growing gap between the leadership and grassroots workers and pointed out that despite being an MLA, he had not been able to meet Rahul Gandhi for almost three years. He wrote, “This is not a personal complaint, but reflects the great emotional disagreement felt by workers in India.” He also pointed out that the party has failed to connect with India’s youth, who constitute 65% of the population under 35 years of age.
Mokim said that Congress under the leadership of Mallikarjun Kharge is not able to connect with the youth of India. He urged Priyanka Gandhi to play the role of central leadership and said that Sachin Pilot, DK Shivkumar, A. Other leaders like Revanth Reddy and Shashi Tharoor should lead the party from the core. He demanded open-heart surgery, ideological and organizational renewal of the party.
In fact, the Mokim family has had a close relationship with the Congress since the time of the freedom struggle and has been a Congress worker all his life. He spoke about his contribution in 2019, which included winning back the Barabati-Cuttack seat after 35 years. Despite a vigorous campaign by senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, his daughter Sophia Firdous won the seat in 2024.
