PM Modi’s visit to Jordan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jordan on Monday on a two-day visit, which aims to strengthen bilateral relations with the Arab country. Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan personally welcomed him at Amman airport. Prime Minister Modi is on a two-day visit at the invitation of King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein of Jordan. His visit is being organized to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan. Prime Minister Modi was given a grand welcome by members of the Indian community on his arrival at a hotel in Amman city of Jordan. He also participated in a cultural program upon arrival. Jordan is the first stop of Prime Minister Modi’s four-day three-nation tour. After this he will visit Ethiopia and Oman. Prime Minister Modi will meet King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein today, followed by delegation-level talks. Prime Minister Modi and the King will address the India-Jordan Business Summit on Tuesday, which will be attended by leading businessmen from both countries. The Prime Minister will also interact with the Indian community in Jordan. He will also visit the city of Petra along with the country’s Crown Prince. Petra is a historical city that had ancient trade links with India. However, his visit will depend on weather conditions. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this is Prime Minister Modi’s first full bilateral visit to Jordan. While visiting Palestine in February 2018, Prime Minister Modi had made a brief stopover in Jordan. “Although it was a transit visit, the special honor given to him by the King made it much more important than a mere transit visit… This full-fledged bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister is taking place after a gap of 37 years,” the Ministry of External Affairs said at a special press conference held in Delhi last week. India and Jordan have strong economic ties. Delhi is Amman’s third largest trading partner. Bilateral trade between the two countries is worth 28 million US dollars. Jordan is also a major supplier of fertilizers, especially phosphate and potash, to India. There are more than 17,500 Indian expatriates living in the Arab country. They are employed in sectors like textiles, construction and manufacturing. “It is an honor for us to welcome Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jordan today as our special guest. This visit reflects our 75 years of close and unbroken relations,” the Jordanian Prime Minister said in a post on social media. He further said, “We look forward to exploring new dimensions of cooperation between the two countries, especially in the economic, investment and technological sectors.” When Prime Minister Modi reached the hotel, he was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian community. He shook hands and talked to people. Local artistes performed traditional Indian dances depicting the country’s cultural heritage.Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein later today, which will be followed by delegation-level talks. Prime Minister Modi and the King will address the India-Jordan Business Summit on Tuesday, which will be attended by leading businessmen from both countries.
