AH-64E Apache Helicopter: An important step is being taken towards strengthening the air combat capability of the Indian Army. With this final batch, the six-helicopter unit of the 451 Army Aviation Squadron based at Jodhpur in Rajasthan will become fully operational. The process of deploying Apache helicopters was initiated in February 2020 with the main objective of enhancing the operational and strike capabilities of the Indian Army along Pakistan’s western border. In the same year, in July 2025, the first batch of Apaches arrived at Hindon Airbase (Ghaziabad) by US transport aircraft. Apache helicopters have also been brought to India by Soviet Union’s Antonov cargo aircraft.

Apache helicopter deal

A defense deal worth around ₹ 5,691 crore was signed between the Indian Army and the US in February 2020. Under the deal, the Army was expected to receive a total of six AH-64E Apache helicopters. Due to supply chain bottlenecks, technical difficulties and global conditions, deliveries were delayed for a long time. As per the original plan, all the helicopters were to arrive in India by 2024, but the first batch arrived in July 2025.

When will the final Apache helicopters arrive?

The final three Apache helicopters are likely to arrive in India by December 2025. After completion of their assembly and technical inspection they will be sent to Jodhpur. As soon as all six helicopters are inducted, the Indian Army’s first Apache attack helicopter squadron will be declared fully operational. Apache helicopter is called ‘Flying Tank’ due to its tremendous killing capacity. It is one of the world’s most advanced multi-role combat helicopters, developed in Mesa, Arizona, USA.

Apache Helicopter Technology

The AH-64E Apache incorporates 26 advanced helicopter technologies. It has the following state-of-the-art facilities:

  • Sensor System: Night vision and thermal imaging facility.
  • Radar: Longbow Radar.
  • Engine: Powerful T700-GE-701D engine and modern digital connectivity.
  • Weapons: 30 mm chain gun with Hellfire and Stinger missiles.

The helicopter can conduct precision strikes in any weather, day or night, and also has the capability to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

How many Apaches does India have in total?

The Indian Air Force (IAF) already has 22 Apache helicopters, which are used in air defense and deep strike missions. Along with Apache, the Ministry of Defense has also signed an agreement with HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) for 156 indigenous ‘Prachand’ light combat helicopters in March 2025. They will be delivered in the next five years. The massive helicopter has been specially designed for the Himalayan frontiers adjacent to China and has stealth, armor and advanced night attack capabilities.
