Bihar CM Nitish Kumar attempts to pull off Muslim woman’s hijab at official ceremony

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is finding himself in the eye of a political storm after a video showing him pulling the hijab off a Muslim woman doctor during an official appointment ceremony in the state capital on Monday went viral on the internet.

What happened?

The incident took place at a programme organised in Patna to distribute appointment letters to 1,283 newly recruited AYUSH doctors, including practitioners of Ayurveda, Homoeopathy and Unani medicine. The event was attended by both Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with senior ministers Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Health Minister Mangal Pandey.

Who is the woman?

In the video, which has spread rapidly on social media, Kumar is seen handing an appointment letter to Nusrat Praveen, a Muslim woman doctor wearing a hijab. Moments later, the Chief Minister appears to ask her about her head covering and then pulls at her hijab in full view of the audience.

Dy CM tries to intervene, but Nitish is undeterred

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who was standing beside Kumar on the stage, is seen trying to stop him, but by then the hijab had already been pulled. The brief exchange left those present visibly uncomfortable before the ceremony moved on.

There has been no official statement so far from the Chief Minister’s Office on the incident. However, opposition leaders and civil rights voices have criticised the act, calling it inappropriate and unacceptable in a public setting.

Netizens voice their ire

The clip has since gone viral, drawing sharp reactions online. Many users questioned the Chief Minister’s conduct at a formal government function and raised concerns about personal boundaries and respect for religious attire.
