Befittingfacts Admin Arrest Mahua Moitra Post

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of West Bengal is facing sharp criticism on social media these days. Recently, while questions were raised on the government regarding the mismanagement during global football star Lionel Messi’s visit to Kolkata, the West Bengal government was busy arresting the administrator of the popular X handle ‘BefittingFacts’. This incident has sparked a new debate in political and digital circles.

According to the information, Shashank Singh, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) under the name ‘BefittingFacts’, has been arrested by Bengal Police. X user Ankur Singh said that Shashank Singh was detained at around 1 am. The arrest came just hours after a post questioned the role of TMC leaders during the Messi event.

In a post published on December 13, Shashank Singh had written, “Every Messi fan should watch this video. The man in white kurta is TMC MLA Arup Biswas, who is forcing Messi to get photographed with his colleagues. The man seen in the black hoodie is the organiser, who is clearly unhappy. Mamata Banerjee arrested the organiser.” In another post, he alleged that the way TMC leaders were taking autographs from Messi and posing for photographs with him, made the event look like a “TMC event” rather than an international sporting event.

However, the police action is being said to be less directly related to the posts related to the Messi program and more to another controversy related to the Lok Sabha.

Two days before her arrest, the handle ‘BefittingFacts’ had alleged that TMC MP Mahua Moitra was smoking e-cigarette inside the Lok Sabha. The post read, “TMC MP Mahua Moitra smoking e-cigarette inside Parliament.” A video was also shared along with it, in which BJP MP Anurag Thakur is seen complaining about this alleged incident to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

In this matter, TMC State General Secretary (IT and Social Media Wing) Neelanjan Das had filed a complaint with the Cyber Police on December 11. In the complaint, he accused ‘BefittingFacts’ and another X user Shashank of spreading “fake, fabricated and defamatory posts”.

In his complaint, Das wrote, “I wish to lodge a complaint regarding the circulation of fake, fabricated and defamatory posts on social media platform It appears.”

Nilanjan Das demanded from the police that action should be taken against the accounts spreading this alleged false and defamatory content and the content related to the X platform should be removed. Sharing his complaint on

It is noteworthy that on December 13, the verified X handle of Nilanjan Das was also suspended by the platform. The entire incident has given rise to a new debate in West Bengal regarding freedom of expression, political criticism on social media and the use of law.
