Punjab: Government is strict on the rights of patients, warning to private hospitals – keeping an eye on every movement of the media world.
Punjab News: Bhagwant Mann government of Aam Aadmi Party has issued some strict and public welfare guidelines for private hospitals of the state. These decisions have been taken with the aim of strengthening the rights of patients and ensuring humane practices in the healthcare sector. According to the orders issued by the Health Department, mortuary facility has been made mandatory in all private hospitals so that the dead bodies can be kept in a safe and dignified manner. This step has been taken to prevent incidents where families had to face difficulties with the bodies of their loved ones. The most important decision is that hospitals will have to hand over the body of the deceased to the family even if the outstanding bills are not paid. This rule is designed to protect families from any kind of harassment during the time of bereavement. This decision of the Punjab Government has been taken keeping in mind the cases where complaints were received of alleged exploitation by some private medical institutions, especially in sensitive situations like death of the patient. Health department officials have clarified that these changes reflect the government’s broader commitment to make Punjab’s health system more people-centric.

It has been made mandatory for all private hospitals to put up clear notice boards displaying these instructions. This step has been taken to increase public awareness and ensure accountability. Information about the rights of patients and their families will be clearly written on these boards, so that they can know their rights and raise their voice against any type of unfair treatment. The Health Department has instructed private hospitals to place these boards prominently at key locations in the hospital so that every person can easily see and read them. For unclaimed bodies, the district administration will take full responsibility of performing the last rites. This provision is for those tragic cases where the deceased has no relatives or cannot be identified. The government has ensured that even in such cases, the deceased gets a dignified farewell and his last rites are duly performed. The district administration has been directed to prepare a clear process in this regard in which local administration, police and health department officials will work together. This initiative reflects human values and social responsibility.
Additional monitoring teams will be deployed in private hospitals to check compliance and promptly address complaints. Health department officials said regular inspections will be conducted and strict action will be taken against hospitals that do not follow these guidelines. The government has made it clear that there will be no compromise on the rights and dignity of patients. The department has also planned to release a helpline number where people can lodge any type of complaint. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reiterated that compassion, dignity and transparency should be at the heart of health services. He assured the citizens that the administration will continue to work to bring fairness and credibility at every level of the system. The Chief Minister said that the Aam Aadmi Party government is committed to protecting the interests of the common people and private health institutions will also be made accountable to the public. He also said that the aim of the government is to create a health system where even the poorest of the poor can get quality treatment without any discrimination.

The government is also planning further reforms that include stronger grievance redressal mechanisms, better emergency care standards, and better coordination between public and private health facilities. Health department officials said a time-bound action plan has been prepared to implement these guidelines. The department has instructed all the district health officers to make all the private hospitals in their area aware of these rules and ensure their compliance. The impact of these reforms will be reviewed in the coming months. Health sector experts have described these guidelines as commendable and said that this step will bring relief to patients and their families. A health worker said such rules should have been implemented long ago as it has been seen many times that private hospitals did not release bodies to families on the pretext of bills. Social workers have also welcomed this decision of the government and said that it is an important step to protect human values. This initiative in Punjab is an important step towards making health services more accountable and transparent.
