Big change on MGNREGA: Modi government is preparing to bring a new rural employment law, know what is the plan

Modi government is preparing to bring a new rural employment law by abolishing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The government has circulated a copy of the bill related to this among Lok Sabha MPs.

News agency PTI gave this news quoting sources. This bill can be introduced in the current winter session of Parliament. The bill has been named ‘Developed India-Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, 2025’.

It states that its objective is to create a new framework for rural development in line with the national vision of ‘Developed India 2047’. The number of working days will be increased from 100 to 125 days.

Earlier on December 12, news had come that the Union Cabinet has changed the name of MNREGA to Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme. However, the notification issued by the government was not released.

Priyanka had said – I do not understand the logic of changing the name.

When the information about changing the name of MGNREGA was revealed, Congress MP from Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi had said that she does not understand the logic behind the decision to change the name of MGNREGA scheme. This leads to unnecessary expenditure.

He said- I don’t understand what is the mentality behind this. First of all, it is the name of Mahatma Gandhi and when it is changed, the government’s resources are again spent on it. Everything from office supplies to stationery has to be renamed, so it’s a big, expensive process. So what is the benefit of doing this?

Congress had said- Modi government changed the names of our 32 schemes.

Congress’s Supriya Shrinet had shared a video on changing the name of MNREGA. In which he said that Narendra Modi has changed the name of MGNREGA to Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme. Modi used to call this MNREGA a bundle of failures of Congress but the reality is that this MNREGA proved to be a lifeline for rural India.

Modi ji’s habit of changing the names of Congress schemes to make them his own is very old, this is what he has been doing for 11 years, to create publicity by changing the names of UPA schemes and putting his own stamp on them.

Supriya shared on X the names of the schemes which were started by Congress. It has also been claimed that their names have been changed.
