Taylor Swift becomes world’s richest female musician
New York: American pop superstar Taylor Swift has chalked up yet another global milestone in her career: the world’s richest female musician with an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion according to the latest rankings published by Forbes.
The new estimate puts Swift ahead of singer-turned-enterprise mogul Rihanna, who has an estimated wealth of about $1.4bn, powered by the success of cosmetics line Fenty Beauty and lingerie brand Savage X Fenty. In contrast, one of the distinguishing characteristics of Swift’s wealth generation has been that the majority of her fortune is actually generated directly from her music and not from the size of a business empire.
Industry analysts say Swift’s earnings are powered by record-breaking concert tours, strong album sales, and sustained dominance on global streaming platforms. Her recently wrapped Eras Tour has widely been described as a historic financial success, emerging as one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time and significantly boosting her overall wealth.
But beyond touring revenue, Swift’s music catalogue is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Royalties from streaming services, licensing deals and physical and digital album sales continue to generate substantial and recurring income, reinforcing her position as one of the most commercially successful artists of her generation.
Of course, a major reason for her financial improvement has been the strategic choice she made to re-record her previous albums with the intention of regaining ownership over her masters. The move not only gave her more creative control over her work but it also improved the value of her catalog over time, affording her the ability to draw more directly from the sale and licensing of her work.
To complement her music income, Swift has been investing hugely in real estate. Her property collection, comprising high-value homes across several US cities, adds tens of millions of dollars to her net worth, according to estimates.
Swift’s rise to number one is reflective of the changing nature of the music industry, whereby artists with formidable fan bases and masters ownership are increasingly able to translate creative success into longstanding financial clout. During the past year, she has also emerged as the most-streamed global artist, further underlining her reach and influence.
Where Forbes appropriately stipulates that net worth estimates ‘fluctuate wildly depending on the market, Swift’s ranking at the top offers a nod to how her music has retained its viability commercially, as well as to the capability of managing the industry based on her own decisions. Analysts expect her to remain in high financial standing, with new projects widely anticipated, firmly positioning her as one of the most financially successful musicians ever, but at this juncture, she is an icon.
