Berlin, December 16: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a joint press conference in Berlin to clarify their positions on the emerging diplomatic initiatives and possible peace process regarding the Ukraine war. Chancellor Merz described the talks as “productive” and said that significant diplomatic momentum is being seen towards ending the Ukraine war. According to him, even though the talks are still in the initial stages, for the first time it seems that a real possibility of a ceasefire is emerging. Merz gave credit for this new environment to US President Donald Trump and said that without his continuous efforts and active role, this diplomatic progress would not have been possible. She also said that Russia is still trying to buy time through harsh and extreme demands, but that European countries remain committed to moving the negotiations forward. The Chancellor particularly praised the “legal and physical security guarantees” for Ukraine offered by the US, calling them important for the peace process. On regional issues, Merz clarified that only Ukrainian citizens defending their territory have the right to decide on any possible changes. President Zelensky said that Ukraine wants its national interests to be respected and he is confident that the allies are listening to him. He reiterated that concrete and effective security guarantees are essential for any peace agreement. Unless there is clarity on these guarantees, it is not possible to consider decisions related to boundaries and areas. Zelensky acknowledged that regional issues are extremely painful for Ukraine. Meanwhile, on the question of the use of frozen Russian assets in the EU, Merz indicated that the current resolution is the only option that can be passed under EU voting rules. He warned that if there is no consensus on this issue at this week’s European Council meeting, it could seriously damage the EU’s credibility and decision-making ability. This joint press conference of the two leaders is being seen as an important diplomatic signal towards a possible peace process on the Ukraine crisis.
