Video Viral: Storm wreaks havoc in Brazil, replica of Statue of Liberty falls, area sealed

New Delhi. A replica of the ‘Statue of Liberty’ collapsed due to a strong storm on Sunday in Guaíba City of Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil. This replica was installed outside the megastore of Haven Retail Company. The video of the incident is becoming increasingly viral on social media. It can be clearly seen in the video that due to the strong winds blowing at a speed of about 90 kilometers per hour, the replica first slowly bends forward and then falls completely in the empty parking area. The matter of relief was that the 11 meter high base of the replica remained firmly in place.

Mayor confirmed the incident

People present nearby at the time of the incident immediately removed their vehicles from there, due to which there is no news of any loss of life or injury. A major accident was averted because the parking space was vacant. Guaiba Mayor Marcelo Maranata confirmed the incident through social media. He told that the statue fell due to strong winds, but no one was harmed. He also praised Havan’s staff, who immediately helped the people and secured the area.

Havan Company said in its official statement that immediately after the incident, the area was sealed under all safety protocols. People’s safety is our priority. The company also clarified that the statue was built as per technical and engineering standards, and has now launched an internal investigation into the incident. Within a few hours the debris was removed and the shop was reopened.

Storm warning was already issued

The Civil Defense Department had already issued mobile alerts. These alerts also reached phones that were on silent mode. People were advised to stay away from strong winds, collapse of buildings and open areas. According to the Meteorological Department, due to the low pressure system, strong winds, dense clouds and sudden changes in weather were seen in the area.

It is noteworthy that replicas of the Statue of Liberty are installed outside Havan’s stores in many cities of Brazil. These are generally made to withstand moderate weather. However, in 2021, a similar statue fell in the city of Capão da Canoa during winds of 70-80 km per hour, causing damage to property.

Debate broke out on social media

The video of this incident is becoming increasingly viral on social media. While on one hand people are raising questions on security, on the other hand many symbolic comments and jokes are also emerging regarding it. The Havan administration has made it clear that the investigation will continue while giving priority to community safety.
