Rob Reiner death case: Hollywood has been left reeling after Nick Reiner, the son of celebrated filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, was formally charged with their murders. Authorities confirmed on Tuesday (December 16) that the 32-year-old has been booked on two counts of first-degree murder, marking a tragic turn in a case.
Nick Reiner has been held without bail since Sunday evening (December 14). The arrests were made hours after the bodies of Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home. Police said both victims had suffered fatal stab wounds. Media reports have stated that the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, found the bodies and contacted emergency services.
LA DA outlines charges in Nick and Michele Reiner case
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges in a press release, calling the case both heartbreaking and complex. District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, “Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife of more than 35 years Michele Singer Reiner’s murder are shocking and tragic. We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken.”
Hochman further noted the emotional toll of such cases. “Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes,” he added.
Nick Reiner charged with two counts of first-degree murder
Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, along with a special circumstance of multiple murders. A separate allegation has also been filed for the use of a dangerous weapon, identified as a knife. His defence attorney, Alan Jackson, told reporters that Reiner did not appear in court on Tuesday as he had not yet received medical clearance. A court appearance is now expected later in the week.

Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood and beyond. Former US President Barack Obama described the Reiners as people who “lived lives defined by purpose”. “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” Obama said. “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people.”
In a joint letter, close friends including Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Larry David and others wrote, “We will miss them for ever.” The letter praised Rob and Michele Reiner’s lifelong commitment to social causes and public service.
