There was a time in India when mobile phone meant Nokia. When it comes to mobile phones, people only know Nokia. Nokia reigned supreme in stores and homes. Nokia was known for brightness, sturdiness, reliability and long lasting battery life. Nokia had a strong hold for many years with just this one tagline ‘Connecting People’. The company that was once in every household in India, the company that dominated the mobile market, is now a mere memory. Nokia suddenly disappeared from the mobile market.

This was the beginning of a trusted brand in India

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, India was embarking on a mobile revolution. Small market, weak network and expensive phones were the conditions in the market. Taking advantage of these things, Nokia made a strategy and started launching their mobile phones in the market.

Simple phone + robust hardware + long battery life + reliable service, Nokia won the hearts of Indians. Nokia started making phones not as a luxury trend but for people’s needs. This is why the company launched a model with a cheap, durable and simple user-interface. Phones with network support in rural areas, dust and heat resistant hardware and long battery life made Nokia stand out from the crowd.

Nokia 3310 is not just a device but an icon

Nokia 3310 had a very important place in the history of Nokia in India. It was not just a device but an icon. The Nokia 3310 was a robust phone with a simple interface and a robust network. It was for this reason that Nokia 3310 made a distinct identity in India. The phone started up well even after a drop, offering two days of battery life after a single charge, while from games to simple menus, the phone was a hit with everyone. Apart from 3310, Nokia models like 1100, 6600, 2100 were also very popular in India. Between 2005–2010, Nokia’s share reached 60 percent. This was a number that no company could reach. What happened when everything was going so well that Nokia suddenly disappeared?

Samsung and Android changed the whole game

When transformed into a simple mobile smartphoneWhen it happened, Nokia got a real hit. Touchscreens, apps, internet and operating systems… this is what will drive the future. But Nokia was too late to realize this. In 2008–2009, Google launched the Android OS, which was open-source and available to every brand. It was fast, modern, app-friendly and constantly updated. But Nokia refused to use this system. The company stuck to their old operating system Symbian, which reduced the company’s dominance and left the company behind. Meanwhile, Samsung started launching Android smartphones. Which featured low price, big screen and new features. People started getting attracted towards these smartphones. Not changing and using the same old system was Nokia’s biggest mistake.

Nokia’s Ovi Store failed to dominate the app market. Nokia was strong in hardware, but people were starting to shift to the world of software. Not adopting Android, sticking to Symbian OS, lagging behind in smartphone trends, lagging behind in the app ecosystem, lapses in internal management and the strength of brands like Samsung, Micromax, Xiaomi have made Nokia lose its existence. The late adoption of Android in the smartphone era and heavy reliance on Windows Phone ended the company’s dominance.

Choosing Windows Phone OS over Android is considered Nokia’s biggest and costliest mistake. Finally, in 2014, Nokia’s mobile business was sold to Microsoft. This decision meant the end of Nokia’s existence in the mobile empire. Nokia now makes smartphones with a new company HMD Global. Some of these models are available in the Indian market.
