PM Modi Oman Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived on a visit to Oman after a long gap of 8 years. This two-day visit is taking place at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said of Oman. Earlier, PM Modi had visited Oman in the year 2018. This time the visit is also being considered special because there are going to be in-depth talks between India and Oman on important issues like trade, investment, energy and security.
Why is Oman so important for India?
Oman is not just a friendly country for India, but a trusted strategic partner in the Gulf region. Oman is the first Gulf country with which the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force conduct joint military exercises. Relations between the two countries have continuously strengthened regarding maritime security. This is the reason why India-Oman relations are considered a strong basis of stability in the Indian Ocean region.
Defense cooperation and Jaguar fighter jet connection
Defense cooperation can be a big issue in this visit of PM Modi. The Jaguar fighter jets present in Oman have now completed their life and the Air Force there is preparing to remove them from service. In such a situation, Oman has proposed to provide spare parts of these aircraft to India. If this agreement is reached, it will be of great help in keeping the Jaguar jets of the Indian Air Force in flight.
Free trade agreement will change business relationship
PM Modi’s visit to Oman is also important because talks on free trade agreement between the two countries can move forward. Under this agreement, custom duty can be reduced or eliminated, which will be of great benefit to the business. India has already signed such an agreement with the UAE and Oman could become the second GCC country to join the list. India exports large quantities of medicines, machinery and food products to Oman.

Global South and strengthening of diplomatic relations
Oman is an important member of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Indian Ocean Rim Association. Oman was invited as a special invitee during India’s G20 chairmanship, which shows the depth of relations between the two countries. This visit of PM Modi will further strengthen India’s role in the Global South and will open many new avenues from energy security to maritime cooperation.
