New Year’s gift: CNG and PNG prices will reduce from January 1
New Delhi: The new year will start with some relief news for the common citizens and motorists facing inflation across the country. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has announced major changes in the tariff structure of natural gas, which will come into effect from January 1, 2026. Due to this change, the prices of domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) are likely to decrease by Rs 2 to 3 per unit.
PNGRB member A.K. Tiwari had said in a special interview that, to simplify the tariff system, the number of zones has been reduced from three to two. Earlier, as per the 2023 system, there were three zones based on distance (Rs 43,80 and 107). Now as per the new structure, the unified rate for Zone-1 will be Rs. 54 has been fixed, which was earlier Rs. This is significantly lower than the rates of 80 and 107. This change will directly benefit CNG and domestic PNG customers across India.
This new tariff structure will cover 312 geographical areas covered by 40 City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies operating in India. Tiwari added, “This will provide huge economic relief to the housewives who use gas in the transport sector and cooking. We have given clear instructions that the companies will have to pass on the full benefit of this reduction to the customers, which we will continuously monitor.”
Licenses have been given to government and private companies to cover the entire country with natural gas network. PNGRB is not only working as a regulator but also as a facilitator. In coordination with the state governments, VAT reduction and the approval process are being made easier, so that the consumption of natural gas will increase in the future and the environment will also benefit.
