Kolkata Fire Blast: Huge explosion at oxygen cylinder godown in Kankurgachhi terrifies residents
A massive fire followed by a series of loud explosions rocked Kolkata on Thursday morning, triggering panic across several parts of the city. The incident occurred at an oxygen cylinder godown located between Kankurgachhi More and the Bengal Chemicals area, a densely populated zone in east-central Kolkata.
According to eyewitnesses, multiple blast-like sounds were heard in quick succession as fire engulfed the storage facility, with locals reporting that nearly 10 to 15 oxygen cylinders may have exploded. The force of the explosions was so intense that residents in surrounding areas, including Ultadanga, Salt Lake Stadium vicinity and parts of the EM Bypass, said their windows rattled and debris was seen flying in the air.
Visuals from the spot showed thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky as fire tenders rushed to the location. Several fire engines were deployed, and firefighting operations continued late into the evening to prevent the blaze from spreading further. Police cordoned off the area and evacuated nearby residents as a precautionary measure.
Officials are yet to confirm casualties or the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary inputs suggest the explosions were triggered by oxygen cylinders stored inside the godown, which intensified the blaze.
Authorities have launched an investigation, while emergency services remain on high alert. Further updates are awaited as the situation develops.
