Minor PAN Card Explained: How Parents Can Apply Online for Children Below 18?
The Minor PAN Card is often misunderstood as a document intended only for individuals aged 18 or older. In reality, even minors are eligible for a PAN card in India. Children below 18 may need a PAN for financial transactions, opening bank accounts, or making investments in their name. However, minors cannot apply independently. Their parents or legal guardians must complete the application process on their behalf.
To increase awareness, the Income Tax Department launched an e-campaign related to the Permanent Account Number on May 8, 2025. This campaign aims to educate people, especially young families, that children under 18 can also obtain a PAN card. This rule applies not only to resident Indian children but also to NRI minors.
Who Can Apply for a Minor PAN Card?
For any child under 18, the PAN card application must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian. The guardian serves as the applicant and is responsible for providing accurate information and documentation. The process is simple and can be completed either online or offline, depending on convenience.
Online and Offline Application Options
Parents or guardians can apply for a Minor PAN Card through both online and offline modes. In the offline method, the PAN application form must be downloaded, completed carefully, and submitted, along with supporting documents, at a PAN service centre.
For those who prefer a faster, more convenient option, the online process is available on the official NSDL website. In online applications, all required documents are uploaded digitally, and the entire process can be completed from home.
Important Rule About PAN Card After Turning 18
A PAN card issued to a minor does not carry the child’s photograph or signature. Once the child turns 18, they must apply for a new PAN card with an updated photo and signature. However, the PAN number remains the same throughout life, ensuring continuity in financial records.
How to Apply for a Minor PAN Card Online?
To apply online, parents or guardians must visit the official NSDL website and select the option for a new PAN application. Under PAN type, “New PAN – Indian Citizenship (Form 49A)” should be selected, and the category should be chosen as “Individual.”
Next, the minor’s personal details, along with the parent or guardian’s address and contact information, must be provided. The parent or guardian’s signature must be uploaded before the form can be submitted.
A new page will open requesting additional details. Here, the information of the parent or guardian who will sign the form on behalf of the minor must be entered. The minor’s photograph and all required supporting documents are uploaded at this stage.
In the final step, the applicable fee must be paid. After successful payment, an acknowledgment number is generated. This number is essential and can be used later to track the application status.
If the option for physical document verification is selected, the complete set of documents must be sent to the service provider’s address within 15 days of the online application. Missing this deadline may result in the application being rejected.
