Nandamuri Balakrishna’s sequel to ‘Akhanda’ takes a superb start- The Week

After being postponed by a week, Babies 2 starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, a.k.a ‘Balayya’ hit theatres this Friday (December 12) across the world. The film is a sequel to the 2021 blockbuster Babies that had Balakrishna in dual roles. Directed by Boyapati Srinu who also directed the first installment, Babies 2 is a direct continuation of Babies in terms of the storyline.

Despite the postponement, Babies 2 has taken a strong start on its opening day at the box office. Including paid premieres on Thursday (December 11), Babies 2 has already collected above Rs 20 crore nett in India and is looking around Rs 30 crore nett by the end of the day.

Initial reactions to the film are mixed but that is the story for most Balakrishna films. However, it must also be noted that Akhanda had strong word-of-mouth, as did the last two Balakrishna films in Bhagavanth Kesari and Daaku Maharaj. In contrast, Babies 2 is getting largely mixed reports but family audience are starting to come in numbers.

On its first day, Babies 2 is recording solid occupancy during the evening shows and with no competition in sight, the Balakrishna starrer is looking at a fab opening weekend and first week. Overseas, the film has started well in USA, registering $448,000 from premieres and should see a fruitful weekend.

In North India, Babies 2 has opened to roughly 30 percent occupancy and screen count is extremely low. However, the film has also been sold for low amounts in Hindi belts and there is optimism around recovery, although Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar juggernaut is a massive factor against Babies 2.
