Gautam Gambhir cannot be a coach… Kapil Dev said – his role is more of ‘management’ than coaching.

Kolkata. India’s first World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, amid criticism over Gautam Gambhir’s working style, on Thursday said that in today’s time, the role of a head coach is more to ‘manage’ the players rather than actually coaching them. Gambhir has come under criticism as India’s head coach after the 0-2 Test series loss to South Africa and his strategy of constantly rotating players and relying on makeshift players has been criticized. Kapil said that the word ‘coach’ is often misunderstood in contemporary cricket.

Kapil Dev said at the Indian Chamber of Commerce ICC Centenary Session, “Today the word that is called coach… ‘Coach’ is a very common word today. Gautam Gambhir cannot be a coach. He can be the manager of the team.” He said, ”When you say coach, coach is someone from whom I learn in school and college. Those people were my coaches. They can manage me.”

Kapil said, “How can you be a coach?” How can Gautam be the coach of a leg-spinner or a wicketkeeper?” He said, ”I think you have to manage. is more important. As a manager you encourage them that you can do it because when you become a manager the young lads trust you.”

Kapil said that if Sunil Gavaskar had played in this era, he would have been the best T20 batsman. “I love everything about cricket – T20, T10, ODI, everything,” he said. I always say one more thing. I said that if Sunil Gavaskar had played in this era, he would have been the best player in T20 also.

Kapil said, “Hitting is very easy for people whose defense is strong. Defense is difficult. So I always say, remember the guy who has great defense, he can always play aggressively because he has that extra time.

Former Indian women’s team captain Mithali Raj, who was present during the session, recalled the moment when India recently won the World Cup at home. “It was a strange feeling seeing ‘India’ written on that cup… because every time you qualify to play the final, there is a photo shoot, you are next to the trophy and you just see Australia, England and New Zealand,” Mithali said.

“I was there twice,” she said. I got a chance to do that photo shoot and every time I felt like when will we find ‘India’ there and finally we found it.
