Sharif Osman bin Hadi of the Inqilab Mancha was inside a tuktuk when he was shot by two bike-borne men, Bangladeshi media reports said on Friday.

The accused have not been identified so far, as Hadi was targeted while travelling towards Bijoynagar of Dhaka. The two men wore helmets and fled immediately after managing to hit him on the head from close range. Hadi was likely to contest from Dhaka-8 constituency as an independent candidate.

The spot of the attack has reportedly been cordoned off by law enforcement, who maintain that they are yet to make a breakthrough in the case.

As per news reports from Bangladesh, CCTV footage showed Hadi riding a battery-powered autorickshaw when the assailants approached him on a motorcycle after following him for some time. It was the pillion rider who fired at Hadi, the reports claimed. The Daily Star identified the exact location of the shooting as the road between the Paltan DR Tower and Baitus Salam Jama Masjid.

Meanwhile, another CCTV footage doing the rounds on social media showed the perpetrators fleeing on a black motorbike from the crime scene. Efforts are underway to collect more CCTV footage.

Sharif Osman bin Hadi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition after being shot in the Box Culvert Road area of Bijoynagar, Bangladeshi media reports said. Unidentified miscreants on a motorbike opened fire at him around 2:25 pm, shortly after Jummah prayers. He was on life support as the bullet remains inside his head, news reports quoted doctors at the Dhaka Medical College as saying. The entry wound was near his left ear, and the Inqilab Mancha coordinator has lost a lot of blood.
