New rules along with PUC and BS-6 also implemented in Delhi, there will be reduction in traffic and pollution.
The government has prepared a comprehensive action plan to deal with the increasing pollution and traffic jams in Delhi. The scheme aims to reduce vehicle pressure on roads and improve the air quality of the capital through technology, better monitoring and efficient use of resources. Under this, many important steps have been announced like promoting car pooling, modernizing traffic management and accelerating road maintenance.
The Delhi government is soon preparing to launch a special car pooling app, through which people going in the same direction will be able to use a shared vehicle. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the aim of this initiative is to reduce the number of private vehicles in the capital, control fuel consumption and reduce pollution.
PUC system will be more strict and effective
The Delhi government has planned to reform the Pollution Control Certificate (PUC) system to control vehicular pollution. The government’s aim is that this system should not become just a formality, but actually the vehicles causing pollution should be strictly monitored.
Investment of crores for road cleaning
Delhi Municipal Corporation will be given assistance of about Rs 2,700 crore over the next ten years to keep the city clean and reduce dust pollution. This amount will be used to purchase modern machinery, which will make the process of street cleaning and garbage collection more effective and faster.
Potholes will be monitored by an external agency
The government is going to hand over the responsibility to an independent agency to deal with the problem of potholes on Delhi’s roads. This agency will survey the roads throughout the year, assess their condition and prepare a report including photographs and provide timely information to the concerned departments.
Traffic situation will change with smart system
Delhi government is developing integrated traffic management system, through which traffic signals can be controlled smartly according to the jam situation. This will reduce unnecessary stopping of vehicles at red lights and will also reduce pollution. Apart from this, collaboration will also be done with Google Maps to identify and monitor pollution affected areas.
Initiative for cooperation with neighboring states also
Delhi government is in constant talks with neighboring states to improve air quality. Also, an agreement has been signed with IIT Madras for the development of special smoke reducing surfaces. The Minister said that it is necessary to rise above politics and work on the issue of pollution.
Increasing pollution is a challenge for the central government.
According to the government, earlier 13 major centers of pollution were identified, their number has now increased to 62. The administration is now working on a strategy to take simultaneous action on pollution caused by vehicles, industrial activities and dust, so that the capital’s air can be cleaned and the city’s transportation smooth.
