The car got a Duo LPG variant in 2004, a second generation and CNG variant in 2010, auto gear shift, dual airbags and ABS in 2015, a VXI+ variant in 2017, a third generation in 2019 and minor model changes in 2022. So far, the WagonR has come in three generations. While maintaining the body format of this car, there have been constant updates in features and compliance.

The WagonR was launched in September 1993 in Japan. After its launch in India, its popularity grew exponentially and today the car is available in more than 75 countries. Global sales of WagonR are expected to reach 1 crore units by August 2025, of which India accounts for about one-third.

Various fuel and transmission options play an important role in the WagonR’s success. LPG, CNG as well as an auto gear shift option introduced in 2015 made the car more accessible to entry-level customers. The WagonR has been constantly updated in terms of safety as well. Initially dual airbags and ABS were offered, but now 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP come as standard across all variants.

The WagonR is based on the fifth generation HEARTECT platform. This platform is useful for weight control, strong structure and production efficiency.
