Violent protests intensify in Bangladesh: ‘No law and order left, Yunus is supporting’

The situation in Bangladesh is deteriorating rapidly after the death of anti-India, Islamic extremist leader Sharif Usman Hadi. Riots have broken out in many parts of the country including the capital Dhaka. From Thursday (18 December) night to Friday (19 December) morning, thousands of people took to the streets and demonstrated demanding justice for Hadi’s murder. Within no time the protests turned violent and reports of arson, vandalism and attacks came from many places.

32-year-old Sharif Osman Hadi was one of the main faces of the coup under the guise of the student movement in the year 2024. Hadi was flown to Singapore for treatment after being shot in an assassination attempt last week, where he died in hospital. As news of Hadi’s death spread, outrage erupted and protests spread from Dhaka to other cities. During this period, anti-India slogans were also raised at many places, due to which the situation became more sensitive.

Amidst the violence, former Information Minister of Bangladesh Mohammad AA Arafat has highlighted serious matters on the current situation. “There is no law and order left in the country. This mob is targeting not just political opponents but everything that represents secular values,” he said in a TV interview.

Arafat said protesting groups attacked the offices of newspapers such as Prothom Alo and the Daily Star, as well as cultural institutions such as Chayanut. He said, “These people are targeting liberals. Anyone who raises voice against fundamentalism is being attacked. Yunus is supporting this group.”

The former minister also said that the current violence is an attack on the spirit of the 1971 liberation war. He said, “Now even the critics of Awami League are not safe. Pro-Pakistan elements have become stronger. People wanted change, but now they have got extremism. These people do not believe in democracy.”

Concern is also being expressed in India over the increasing violence and anti-India atmosphere in Bangladesh. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that the increasing hostility against India in the neighboring country is extremely worrying and India cannot turn its back on the people of Bangladesh. According to sources, an attempt is being made to show the upcoming elections as unsafe due to the violence that broke out after Hadi’s death, so that the elections can be postponed and the fundamentalist forces get time to strengthen. At present the situation remains tense and the eyes of the entire region are fixed on the further developments in Bangladesh.
